Supervised Sub-Acute and Alcohol Detox

Villa Garden Square

Malibu’s Luxury Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs

At Avalon Malibu, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment program. Each person who joins our therapeutic community comes to us with a different background, different issues and different needs. Therefore, our drug and alcohol programs offer individually designed treatments for every client.

The first step for those who need it will be supervised detoxification.

Before the intensive work of rehabilitation can begin, all of the toxins built up with the abuse of drugs and alcohol will need removal from the body. Long-term drug use produces excess toxins in the body when the amount is too much for the liver to process. The methodologies we offer at Avalon Malibu are used to begin the detoxification process so we can access a clearer mindset. Each client is made to feel supported, safe and as comfortable as possible during the transition into recovery.

Alcohol Withdrawal: Symptoms, Timeline, Risks & Medical Detox

Alcohol withdrawal can be one of the most medically important considerations when a person with Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) decides to stop drinking. Individuals who have developed alcohol dependence, particularly after prolonged or heavy alcohol use, can experience withdrawal symptoms when alcohol consumption is suddenly reduced or stopped. Symptoms may range from mild anxiety, irritability, sweating, nausea, tremors, and difficulty sleeping to more serious complications, including seizures and delirium tremens.

Because severe alcohol withdrawal can be dangerous and potentially life-threatening, attempting to detox from alcohol without appropriate medical supervision may carry significant risks. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) specifically advises that alcohol withdrawal can be a serious medical condition, particularly for people with severe AUD.

What Is the Alcohol Withdrawal Timeline?

The timing and severity of alcohol withdrawal vary from person to person and depend on factors including the amount and frequency of alcohol consumed, duration of alcohol use, previous withdrawal experiences, overall health, and the presence of other medical or psychiatric conditions.

Early symptoms can begin within hours after the last drink and may include anxiety, restlessness, tremors, sweating, nausea, headache, elevated heart rate, and insomnia. Symptoms can intensify over the following days, and some individuals may develop severe complications such as seizures or delirium tremens. This variability is one reason a medical assessment is important before attempting to stop drinking after prolonged or heavy alcohol use.

Why Medical Alcohol Detox Matters

Medical detox is designed to provide a safe and structured environment for managing the physical effects of alcohol withdrawal. During supervised detox, trained medical professionals can monitor vital signs and withdrawal symptoms, assess changing medical needs, provide appropriate medications when clinically indicated, and respond promptly if complications arise.

At Avalon Malibu, supervised sub-acute and alcohol detox provides individualized medical oversight within a private residential treatment environment. Detox is not considered the entirety of alcohol treatment; rather, it is an important first step that can allow an individual to become medically stabilized before beginning deeper therapeutic work.

Once withdrawal has been safely managed, treatment can address the underlying factors contributing to alcohol addiction, alcoholism, or alcohol dependence. This may include individual psychotherapy, psychiatric care, treatment for co-occurring mental health conditions, family therapy, relapse-prevention planning, and other evidence-based approaches offered as part of residential alcohol rehab.

Detox Is the Beginning of Recovery

Completing alcohol detox does not by itself treat Alcohol Use Disorder. Detox primarily addresses the body's immediate physical dependence on alcohol, while comprehensive alcohol treatment addresses the psychological, behavioral, emotional, and environmental factors that can contribute to continued drinking.

For many individuals, transitioning directly from supervised detox into residential treatment provides an opportunity to continue receiving clinical support while developing healthier coping strategies and understanding the circumstances that contributed to alcohol use. At Avalon Malibu, the goal is to create a seamless continuum from medical stabilization into individualized treatment and long-term recovery planning.

If you or someone you love may be physically dependent on alcohol, do not assume that suddenly stopping drinking at home is safe. A confidential clinical assessment can help determine the appropriate level of care and whether medically supervised detox is recommended.

Why Integrated Detox and Mental Health Treatment Matters

When substance use and mental health conditions occur together, treating them in isolation can leave important factors contributing to continued substance use unaddressed. Integrated treatment considers the whole person—physical health, mental health, substance use, relationships, environment, and long-term recovery goals.

For someone entering Avalon Malibu for drug or alcohol detox, this may mean that the treatment process extends beyond withdrawal management. After medical stabilization, clients can transition into individualized residential treatment where clinicians can address addiction and co-occurring mental health conditions within one coordinated plan.

This continuum can include medical and psychiatric assessment, individual therapy, group therapy, family involvement, medication management when appropriate, mindfulness, physical activity, trauma-informed care, relapse-prevention planning, and other therapies based on the client's needs.

Avalon Malibu's oceanfront residential setting also provides an environment in which clients can begin establishing healthier routines during early recovery. Time outdoors, physical activity, mindfulness, nutrition, and access to the beach can complement but not replace medical and evidence-based clinical treatment.

Drug and Alcohol Detox When Mental Health Conditions Are Also Present

For many people entering drug or alcohol detox, substance use is only part of the clinical picture. Alcohol and drugs may have been used to temporarily manage anxiety, depression, traumatic memories, panic, insomnia, or other emotional distress. At the same time, substance use and withdrawal can worsen or complicate psychiatric symptoms. This relationship can make it difficult to determine where one condition ends and another begins.

When substance use and a mental health condition occur together, they are referred to as co-occurring disorders or a dual diagnosis. SAMHSA recommends screening for both mental health and substance use conditions and, when appropriate, treating them together through an integrated approach.

At Avalon Malibu, detox is therefore viewed as more than simply removing alcohol or drugs from the body. It is an opportunity for medical and clinical professionals to evaluate the individual's physical and psychological needs, monitor changes during withdrawal, and begin developing an individualized treatment plan for the next stage of recovery.

Detox for Alcohol or Drugs and Anxiety

Anxiety and substance use frequently occur together. Some individuals begin drinking or using drugs because they temporarily experience relief from worry, panic, social anxiety, stress, or physical tension. Over time, however, repeated substance use can reinforce a cycle in which anxiety leads to substance use, substance use temporarily reduces distress, and the effects of intoxication, rebound symptoms, or withdrawal contribute to additional anxiety.

During detox, anxiety may become particularly noticeable as the effects of alcohol or drugs wear off. Symptoms such as restlessness, difficulty sleeping, irritability, racing thoughts, or physical tension may require careful clinical assessment because they can be related to withdrawal, an underlying anxiety disorder, or both.

At Avalon Malibu, individuals are evaluated for co-occurring mental health concerns so that treatment does not stop once the substance has left the body. Following stabilization, therapy can focus on identifying the thoughts, behaviors, stressors, and emotional triggers that may have contributed to substance use while helping clients develop healthier strategies for managing anxiety.

Detox for Alcohol or Drugs and Depression

Depression can both contribute to and be exacerbated by problematic substance use. Some individuals use alcohol or drugs in an attempt to numb sadness, hopelessness, loneliness, grief, or emotional pain. Others may experience worsening depression as a consequence of prolonged substance use, disrupted sleep, strained relationships, or the physical and psychological effects of addiction.

During detox and early recovery, changes in mood can be especially important to monitor. Withdrawal, sleep disruption, and the sudden absence of a substance that had been used as a coping mechanism can make underlying emotional symptoms more apparent.

For this reason, detox should be followed by a comprehensive assessment of mental health when clinically appropriate. Avalon Malibu's integrated approach allows substance use and depression to be considered together rather than assuming that treating one will automatically resolve the other.

Residential treatment following detox can provide the structure needed to address depression through individualized psychotherapy, psychiatric care, medication evaluation when appropriate, mindfulness, healthy physical activity, nutrition, and other evidence-based and supportive therapies.

Detox for Alcohol or Drugs and Trauma

Trauma and substance use can become closely connected. A person who has experienced trauma may turn to alcohol or drugs as a way of temporarily escaping intrusive memories, emotional distress, hypervigilance, fear, shame, or other difficult experiences.

Substances may provide short-term relief while ultimately making emotional regulation more difficult. When the substance is removed, feelings that had been suppressed or avoided may become more noticeable.

For individuals with a history of trauma, detox and early stabilization should therefore be approached with sensitivity and careful attention to psychological safety. Trauma-informed treatment avoids assuming that every client should immediately process traumatic experiences during the earliest stage of recovery.

At Avalon Malibu, the initial focus may be on stabilization, safety, emotional regulation, and developing healthy coping mechanisms. Once clinically appropriate, treatment can progress toward deeper therapeutic work addressing the experiences and patterns that may have contributed to substance use.

Detox for Alcohol or Drugs and PTSD

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) can occur alongside alcohol and drug use disorders, and the combination can make treatment more complex. Some individuals use substances to temporarily reduce symptoms such as intrusive memories, nightmares, hypervigilance, anxiety, emotional numbness, or difficulty sleeping.

Importantly, treating the substance use disorder alone does not necessarily resolve PTSD. SAMHSA's clinical guidance recommends addressing co-occurring PTSD and substance use disorders concurrently when appropriate, while establishing safety and stabilization early in treatment.

During detox, the clinical team can monitor changes in sleep, anxiety, mood, agitation, and other symptoms while determining whether additional psychiatric assessment is appropriate. After stabilization, an individualized treatment plan may incorporate trauma-informed psychotherapy and, when clinically appropriate, therapies such as EMDR.

The objective is to help the individual develop healthier ways of responding to traumatic memories, emotional distress, and triggers without relying on alcohol or drugs.

Therapies Might Include:

Therapeutic Residential and Intensive Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs

Once we have cleansed the body of toxins, clients will begin their rehabilitation, starting with therapeutic work. Individual and group counseling sessions help clients work through and uncover deeply hidden causes of addiction. Self-medication is often the crutch people will turn to when situations become difficult; instead, we teach coping mechanisms to help them survive and work through stress. While physical activities make the body strong once again, psychological conditions must also be addressed, such as co-occurring disorders. At Avalon Malibu, we offer intensive outpatient and residential programs for recovery from drug and alcohol addictions. Every program created at Avalon is individualized and adaptable to suit each client's specific needs.

Residential Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs

Our luxury residential facilities are created for individuals who need intensive treatment and support, and our program is fully licensed to treat mental illness as well as addiction. These programs are designed not only for those who need round-the-clock support, but also for those who struggle with the cycle of substance abuse and mental health conditions. Treatment at Avalon is rooted in mindfulness, which helps teach clients the coping mechanisms they need to support and manage mental health conditions. Our beautiful facility is located on the beach in Malibu, so come and relax with us and get the support you need to overcome addiction.

Intensive Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs (IOP)

Our Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) are designed for those who may not be able to afford residential treatment, or who don’t necessarily need constant monitoring. These individuals may already have a support system from their family or friends who can help monitor their situation and medications. Individuals must complete a primary treatment program before enrolling in this program. Our IOP programs are also designed for those who need to maintain other responsibilities such as family, work, etc.

Aftercare Addiction Treatment Programs

Aftercare and transition into everyday life are equally important in both the recovery process and in the rehabilitation experience itself that continues long after. At Avalon Malibu, we are committed to providing our clients with the support and communication they need to maintain their recovery and prevent relapse.

We hold a completion ceremony to honor the work the client has done, to allow the client to transition into independent living, and to affirm the continued communication and support needed to break the cycle of abuse and addiction. Each of our clients comes to us as a unique individual, and it is our mission to honor and respect that individuality while bringing a wide range of therapy models into play. We will work together with you to find the perfect combination of treatments for maximum relief and recovery.

Detox Is Only the First Step

Completing detox does not mean that an alcohol or drug addiction has been treated. Detox addresses the immediate physical effects of stopping substance use, while comprehensive treatment addresses the psychological, behavioral, and environmental factors that contribute to continued use.

For individuals with anxiety, depression, trauma, or PTSD, the transition from detox into residential treatment can be especially important. Continued clinical support provides an opportunity to understand the relationship between mental health symptoms and substance use while developing coping skills that can be used after treatment ends.

At Avalon Malibu, the goal is to provide a continuum of care that moves from safe stabilization to individualized treatment, dual diagnosis care, relapse prevention, and long-term recovery planning.
